<p>If you’re after a Highland escape that swerves the clichés, Newhall Mains on the Black Isle (just 20 minutes from Inverness) is your girl. Yes, there’s even a private airstrip if you’re feeling <em>very</em> extra – something no other UK hotel can currently boast.</p>



<p>A beautifully reimagined former farmstead, this place mixes boutique hotel rooms with self-catering cottages, all wrapped up in a design-led, seriously considered restoration. Forget twee, rustic chic – this is polished, pared-back luxury with soaring ceilings, statement art and big windows that drink in that crisp northern light.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-vibe">THE VIBE</h2>

<p>You’re in the Highlands, but this is about as far away as you can get from a stiff Scottish country house hotel. You won’t find tartan overload or taxidermy here. Instead, it’s all about texture and tone – exposed stone, natural wool and confidence in the design. The expansive walls of the communal spaces act like a gallery for work selected from the Royal Scottish Academy.</p>

<p>With just five cottages and four suites, it feels more like a private estate than a hotel. Guests drift between their own spaces, the bar (pouring cocktails from mid-afternoon) and the courtyard – where a firepit crackles nightly (whatever the weather –&nbsp;on our stay we had hail and snow!).&nbsp;</p>

<p>Completing the sense of retreat is the sauna and Scandinavian style cold plunge – which can be booked for individual use for an hour. The sauna is completely private with its own small changing area complete with dressing gowns and slippers. The plunge is in galvanised metal tub and if you&#8217;re feeling brave, you can tip a bucket of cold water over yourself too for an instant cooldown. I passed on the bucket! If you fancy something less intense, there&#8217;s also the option of in-room treatments and massages.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-scoff-amp-quaff">SCOFF &amp; QUAFF</h2>



<p>Food here is rooted firmly in Scotland, with ingredients farmed, fished and foraged locally, much of it from the Black Isle itself.</p>



<p>Spruce, the restaurant, is open for dinner Thursday to Sunday, with a focus on from-scratch cooking. At the helm is Spruce is led by Head Chef Matt Heeley (formerly of The Newt in Somerset) with a menu showcasing quality local produce. </p>

<p>We had hand rolled linguine, which was exquisite in its simplicity, and cod loin landed at Peterhead. The menu is concise – three snacks, four starters, four mains – and vegetarians rejoice – more than one veggie option.</p>



<p>The bar serves excellent cocktails and has a strong whisky offering with tastings and masterclasses available. Afternoon tea and picnic hampers are also on the menu for days out and treatsy moments.</p>



<p>And, if you’re wondering where to eat on the evenings the restaurant is closed, you’re not stranded. Instead, you can order a chef-prepared meal to be stocked in your cottage, ready to heat up. It’s a thoughtful, practical touch that fits the laid-back feel.</p>



<p>Breakfast is served every day between 8 and 10 am – a cornucopia of continental style delights, including a clever egg-boiling machine, estate honey from the comb, sourdough bread, local butter, smoked salmon, Scottish cheeses and, of course, delicious pastries.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-stay">STAY</h2>



<p>There are two distinct styles of accommodation. The Fraser rooms are more traditional hotel setups, spacious at around 30 to 40 square metres, with king-size beds and their own seating areas.</p>



<p>The cottages are where things get interesting. Options range from one-bedroom garden cottages to a large three-bedroom house with multiple bathrooms, open-plan living and a private garden. With log-burners and fully equipped kitchens, you can really lean into the rest you need.&nbsp;</p>

<p>We had the Cosy Suite, the smallest of the one-bed cottages, but incredibly spacious for all that. A log burner in the living room and a large sofa – the kind you can sprawl out on, plus a large bath and Bramley toiletries upstairs – made it easy to lean into some much-needed rest. It had a fully-fitted kitchen, fresh milk in the fridge, plus lots of extras to enjoy – beer, wine, bottled water, Irn Bru and other soft drinks. I was particularly delighted to discover Martini glasses and blocks of ice in the freezer, to be used with house pre-batched cocktails – a nice touch.</p>

<p>Upstairs a dressing room was invitingly decorated with a nod to Chinoiserie style without being over the top and an extremely comfortable super king size bed made the night’s sleep a sound one.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-kid-friendly">KID FRIENDLY?</h2>



<p>While I’d say the overall feel skews more towards couples and small groups than families, with most guests staying for short breaks or returning for longer retreat-style visits, the larger cottage does lend itself to bigger family groups looking to spend quality time together.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-dog-friendly">DOG FRIENDLY?</h2>



<p>Dogs are very welcome and well looked after, with beds, bowls and treats provided. They can stay in selected rooms and cottages and are allowed in most public areas, but – take note – not the restaurant.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-out-and-about"><strong>OUT AND ABOUT</strong></h2>



<p>This stretch of the Black Isle is all about nature, history and slow exploration.</p>



<p>You can use one of the hotel’s e-bikes for free to make the relatively flat and easy 30-minute cycle to nearby Cromarty. An 18th-century harbour town full of character, it’s a good spot to come to for lunch, fossil hunting or to look in awe at the rigs in the firth.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Wildlife is another big draw – there are bottlenose dolphins to spot at both Cromarty and the lighthouse in Fortrose. The hotel offers boat trips on their own RIB to get close to the action for a fee. You can also book a flight to get an aerial view of the Black Isle and beyond, with the hotel’s owner Euan at the helm as your pilot and guide.</p>



<p>Walks, historic sites, monuments and castles are all in easy reach if you’ve the itch to get out and get busy, but the spaciousness of the place – its bar, library and sauna, in particular – really lends itself to going slow and taking it easy. </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-muddy-verdict"><strong>THE MUDDY VERDICT</strong></h2>



<p><strong>Good for: </strong>Couples, design-conscious travellers and small groups looking for a relaxed but polished coastal escape with plenty to do – or not do.</p>



<p><strong>Not for: </strong>Anyone after full-service, round-the-clock hotel formality or a bustling, family-heavy resort vibe.</p>



<p><strong>The damage: </strong>The Cosy Suite starts at £600 per night for two, including breakfast. Main courses at dinner range between £20 and £40.</p>
