Scotland’s Far North may feel remote, but that’s exactly what makes it brilliant – especially when you find the right base.

We love the House of the Northern Gate (near Dunnet), a gorgeous retreat with sea views and cosy corners. It’s the perfect hub for exploring the coast’s castles, beaches and wildlife spots. Think sunrises over the Pentland Firth and roaring fires on stormy nights.

SCOFF AND QUAFF

Remote doesn’t mean rustic when it comes to food.

Seafood lovers should book ahead at The Captain’s Galley in Scrabster, widely considered one of Scotland’s best fish restaurants. Expect ultra-fresh daily catches served with harbour views. Nearby, Forss House Hotel delivers refined Highland dining using local estate produce and seafood, while Wick’s Bord de l’Eau offers relaxed French cooking overlooking the river – perfect for long summer evenings.

For daytime pit stops, locals swear by Olive Café in Thurso for excellent coffee and pastries, and Cocoa Mountain in Durness is legendary for artisan chocolates and dangerously good hot chocolate.

If you’re self catering, check out Annie’s Bakery for breads, pies and cakes. Both Cairn Hill Organic Beef and Caithness Smokehouse deliver high‑quality local meat and smoked seafood right to your door.

MUST DO

Beaches

There’s no chance of overcrowding here. The north coast’s beaches are vast. Dunnet Bay is one of Scotland’s finest beaches – a sweeping arc of golden sand backed by dunes and popular with surfers thanks to consistent waves (less crowded than Cornwall, infinitely wilder).

Nearby Peedie Sands offers a quieter, hidden-gem alternative perfect for peaceful walks.

Big skies

Wide horizons and a distinct lack of light pollution make the skies of the north coast a spectacle in themselves. Castlehill Heritage Centre is a designated Dark Sky Discovery Site for constellation spotting on clear (moonless) nights. In the winter there’s a fair chance of catching sight of the Northern Lights here too – after all Dunnet Head is only slightly south of Stavanger.

And in the summer months the light lives long – sunset on Midsummer’s Day is around 10.30pm meaning there’s around 18 and a half hours of daylight to max out.

Take to the skies if you’re daring enough: The most northerly zipline in the UK is at Durness. You’ll get amazing ocean views from 100ft up – at 45mph! Each to their own…

Wildlife

Dunnet Head is officially the northernmost point of mainland Britain – yep, it’s a full 2.35 miles further north than John O’Groats and a great fact to bank for your next pub quiz. Expect jaw-dropping cliff views and seabirds wheeling overhead.

Nature lovers also shouldn’t miss the Duncansby Stacks, towering sea pillars carved by centuries of Atlantic swell, or the vast peatlands of the Flow Country, the first UNESCO-recognised Peatland World Heritage Site, a wilderness rich in rare birdlife.

Sea Wolf Wildlife Tours offers boat trips from Thurso Harbour for spotting dolphins, whales, puffins and more with expert local insight. For the dedicated birdwatcher, St John’s Loch is a good twitching spot complete with hides.

Castles

Fans of The Crown (and the royals) will remember that after George VI died, the Queen Mum headed to the far north of Scotland to grieve. She stayed at Dunnet Head – in what is now The House of the Northern Gate. She had such a great time she bought her own place up the coast – The Castle of Mey.

Pop in to see the lovingly restored 16th-century castle and see what caught her attention. It’s filled with her furniture, photographs and treasures, and if that’s not your vibe, the walled gardens overlooking the Pentland Firth alone are worth the visit.

For something moodier, head to Castle Sinclair Girnigoe, a spectacular cliff-top ruin near Wick. Once home to the powerful Sinclair clan, its crumbling towers cling dramatically to the coastline – part fairy tale, part Game of Thrones energy.

History

History here stretches far beyond castles. Traditional crofting life is beautifully preserved at Mary-Ann’s Cottage in Dunnet, while the North Coast Visitor Centre in Thurso brings Viking heritage and local stories vividly to life. And keep an eye on the Caithness Broch Project, an ambitious initiative recreating one of Scotland’s ancient Iron Age towers.

And since you can see Orkney over the Firth, why not hop on a boat over for a day from John O’Groats to see Neolithic wonders like Skara Brae and the Ring of Brodgar? It would almost be rude not to.

Arts and crafts

For art and culture, Lyth Arts Centre in Lybster (housed in a converted church) offers performances, exhibitions and workshops that connect you with the creative soul of the region. Meanwhile, Castlehill Heritage Centre brings local archaeology, geology and crafts to life – and it’s nestled beside an old quarry with real historical weight.

Whisky and gin

Gin and whisky fans are equally spoilt. Dunnet Bay Distillery, makers of award-winning Rock Rose Gin (famously served at Harry and Meghan’s wedding), offers tastings infused with local botanicals. Whisky pilgrims can tour Old Pulteney in Wick, the revived Wolfburn Distillery in Thurso, or the UK mainland’s most northerly distillery at John O’Groats – 8 Doors Distillery. And keep an eye out for Stannergill Whisky – currently in development – promising even more local tipples in the future and a great cafe in the meantime.

Walks

Walkers are spoilt for choice: tackle the distinctive peak of Morven – the highest in Caithness – or “Queen of the Scottish Mountains” Ben Loyal for panoramic hikes with views (on a clear day, at least) that make every step worth it. If you prefer things a little flatter, explore sections of the coastal John O’Groats Trail or simply wander heather-lined paths and empty shorelines.

The atmospheric Whaligoe Steps are also well worth the wander – descend 365 stone steps to a hidden harbour once used by fisherwomen hauling catches from the sea.

GET AROUND

Buses, bikes and boats

Wheels are handy up here but public transport exists – you just need to plan ahead.

There are regular buses linking Dunnet with Thurso, John O’Groats and Wick and coaches connect to Inverness if you’re coming from further south. Taxis and chauffeured options are plentiful – great for door‑to‑door touring without the stress of narrow Highland roads.

Bike hire, boat tours and guided walks give you more ways to immerse in the coast’s wild beauty too.
