A historic village inn in Muthill, just outside Crieff in Perthshire, <a href="https://www.coorie-inn.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Coorie Inn</a> is a design-led country bolthole with six en suite bedrooms, a destination restaurant serving modern Scottish cuisine, and a bar and lounge made for settling in over a cocktail or a wee dram.



This spot has serious pedigree too – there’s been a hostelry here for over 250 years, previously trading as The Drummond Arms, The Village Inn and The Barley Bree. Now reborn as Coorie Inn (from the Scots for “to snuggle in”), it wears its history lightly but stylishly.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-vibe">THE VIBE</h2>



All the comforting hallmarks of a traditional Scottish inn are here – stone walls, roaring fires, leather armchairs – but this is not your dusty, old-school pub-with-rooms. Lush houseplants, bespoke soft furnishings (made by a local, former dressmaker) and lots of soft lighting give it a polished, stylish edge, keeping things contemporary, with a warm, cocooning atmosphere.&nbsp;

Subtle touches add wit – look out for the mini figures scaling the dining room wall as if it were a cliff face – and all the wee curios and antiques make the space feel personal. The mood is intimate and characterful – the ideal spot for a grown-up country escape.



Muthill itself is part of the charm: a historic village with medieval roots and the picturesque remains of its 12th-century parish church still standing nearby.&nbsp;



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-scoff-amp-quaff">SCOFF &amp; QUAFF</h2>

This is where Coorie Inn really flexes. The menu is tight (always a good sign) – five starters, five mains – and showcases modern Scottish cooking with a strong local, seasonal focus. Unsurprising when you consider that owners Phill Skinazi and Andrew Mackay are both former pastry chefs – Phill at nearby Gleneagles and Andrew at Turnberry.&nbsp;



That means that whatever else happens, you must leave room for dessert!&nbsp;



But let’s start from the top. Leaning into the local, the sourdough bread comes from Damsel Bakery in Crieff and&nbsp; butter from Strathearn Dairy in Comrie.

On my visit as a starter I enjoyed onion tatin (all about the pastry!) made with macadamia nut and blue murder cheese, served on a base of incredibly creamy potato. I’m a sucker for lamb so had to go for hogget rump as a main. Perfectly cooked, so that it was slightly pink, and full of flavour it was served with a delicately layered finger of potato as a Pomme Anna and spring greens, including locally foraged wild garlic.



The wine list offers plenty of choice without being a weighty tome, helpfully with ‘sommelier’s choice’ selections to whittle down the list further.

Yes, I had room (just!) for pudding – after all, it would have been rude not to. But what to choose? Tarte Tatin? Yorkshire rhubarb? It had to be soufflé – and what a treat it was. Incredibly light, with vanilla cheesecake crumbs on the top, a slightly tart yoghurt to pleasantly cut through the creaminess and, what really made it for me, heather honey from the Phill’s own hives.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-stay">STAY</h2>



There are six en suite bedrooms in total, all individually styled but very much of a piece, with thoughtful decorative touches and a strong sense of personality rather than anonymous hotel blandness.

Each is slightly different –&nbsp;an invitation to pay a return visit to find a favourite. There&#8217;s one king sized room and three standard super king rooms, with slight variations in size.

Step up a level and there’s the deluxe super king, described as the second biggest room, with a little more space. But the one to bag if you can is room one, the superior super king, which is the largest and one of the most popular. It’s the showstopper, complete with the inn’s only bath, a gloriously eye-catching gold tub and views out towards the old church.

It sounds like the kind of room regulars return for, and apparently many do, with some guests loyal to a particular room and others making a point of trying them all before picking a favourite. Got a four-legged friend? Two of the bedrooms are dog friendly, which is useful if you’re bringing a canine plus one.



Breakfast in the morning picks up on all the good things about dinner the night before – fresh pastries, bread and if you’ve the stomach, a hearty full Scottish breakfast complete with the holy trinity of haggis, black pudding and tattie scone. I had a stack of buttermilk pancakes, crispy bacon and maple syrup – spot on for a hike in the hills that morning.&nbsp;



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-out-and-about">OUT AND ABOUT</h2>



The Coorie Inn is a brilliant base for a Perthshire potter. Open in the summertime are Drummond Castle Gardens – famous for appearances in both Rob Roy and Outlander. Whisky fans will be pleased to be so near to both <a href="https://scotland.muddystilettos.co.uk/eat/review-the-gastronomic-stay-at-the-glenturret-lalique/">Glenturret</a> and Tullibardine Distilleries and history buffs will want to check out Innerpeffray Library – Scotland’s first and oldest lending library.&nbsp;



Fancy a stroll? Lady Mary’s Walk starting in Crieff along the River Earn is an easy 3.5 mile there-and-back through woodland. You can pick up the river walk closer to Muthill too – just head out of the village behind the local primary school to pick up the path. For a short clamber with a great view, head to The Knock, also in Crieff, where you’ll be rewarded with 360 views of the Ochil Hills on one side and the Trossach range on the other.



If your ideal weekend formula is walk, lunch, bath, fire, repeat, you’re in business.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-muddy-verdict">THE MUDDY VERDICT</h2>



Coorie Inn is a small but mighty contender in the ever-crowded “stylish pub with rooms” category. What elevates it is the sense of personality: a genuinely historic setting, a strong design eye and enough standout details to make it memorable rather than merely nice.



Good for: a romantic weekend, a foodie overnighter and anyone who wants to book a room with a gold bath and dine out on it for the next several years.



Not for: Anyone after a big hotel with spa, gym and endless facilities or anyone who needs somewhere to stay with a lift –&nbsp;it’s all stairs here. There is level entry into the restaurant from the car park, but the building’s age means the toilets aren’t wheelchair accessible.



The damage: The smallest room starts from £190 per night bed and breakfast. Mains in the restaurant range between £24 and £38.
