<p>The Michelin stars have landed, the Highlands are calling, and frankly, Scotland is continuing to have a moment. From elegant Edinburgh townhouses to distilleries, lochs and heather-draped drama, this is a road trip that strings together some of the finest dining in the UK – with boutique stays and scenic detours thrown in for good measure. Pack your elasticated trousers and crack on.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-edinburgh"><strong>Edinburgh</strong></h2>



<p>We begin in Edinburgh, where Michelin-starred restaurants cluster around an already brilliant food scene. Seven of Scotland’s eleven stars are here. That’s a lot to eat your way around in one go, so we don’t suggest you try. After all, having restaurants left on the list makes the ideal excuse to make a return trip.</p>

<p>Chef Stuart Ralston is the name behind a suite of great Edinburgh restaurants including <a href="https://scotland.muddystilettos.co.uk/eat/restaurants-bars/vinette-edinburgh/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Vinette</a>, Tipo and Noto. <a href="https://lylaedinburgh.co.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><strong>LYLA</strong></a> is the one Michelin-starred jewel in the crown, offering an exquisite seafood forward tasting menu with paired wines to die for. And now, you can book into the rooms above the restaurant, restored by Glasgow-based interior architects Scarinish Studio. </p>

<p>Lunch in Leith, where three of the city’s Michelin-starred restaurants are clustered in the enchanting neighbourhood of The Shore. Choose between Sam Yorke’s <a href="https://www.heron.scot/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><strong>Heron</strong></a> – he was the youngest chef in Scottish history to earn a star, the classic, polished, old-school excellence of <a href="https://restaurantmartinwishart.co.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><strong>Restaurant Martin Wishart</strong></a>, or <a href="https://thekitchin.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><strong>The Kitchin</strong></a>, the eponymous restaurant of chef Tom Kitchin.</p>

<p>Or dine in the evening at <a href="https://www.averyedi.co.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><strong>Avery</strong></a> in <a href="https://scotland.muddystilettos.co.uk/best-places-to-live/scotland/stockbridge-edinburgh/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Stockbridge</a> – a restaurant that moved wholesale from the streets of San Francisco to relocate itself in a Georgian townhouse. <a href="https://www.timberyard.co/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><strong>Timberyard</strong></a> snuggled below castle rock is another option. Or venture slightly south of the city centre and indulge in the intimate environment of <a href="https://www.condita.co.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><strong>Condita</strong></a>. So many choices. Basically, you’re going to have to come back!</p>



<p>Stay again at LYLA, or if you fancy a change, book in at <a href="https://gleneagles.com/townhouse/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">The Gleneagles Townhouse</a> (a Michelin key holder) and enjoy a nightcap in the Lamplighters bar – exclusive to guests and members.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-fife"><strong>Fife</strong></h2>

<p>Head over the iconic Forth bridges to Fife – a region known for its incredible food produce, with a food scene to match.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The East Neuk at the county’s eastern end is postcard-picturesque. Stop at <a href="https://www.baern.co.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Baern</a> in The Bowhouse just outside St Monans or <a href="https://kinneucharinn.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">The Kinneuchar Inn</a> in Kilconquhar for a spot of lunch, stretch your legs and work up a renewed appetite by walking part of the Fife Coastal Path.</p>



<p>Book for the night at <a href="https://www.thepeatinn.co.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><strong>The Peat Inn</strong></a>. A Michelin classic with rooms, it was the first Scottish restaurant to get a star in the 1980s. Set deep in the Fife countryside, this is where things slow down: immaculate cooking and deep comfort. After Edinburgh’s buzz, this feels like a proper exhale.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-perthshire"><strong>Perthshire</strong></h2>

<p>We’re absolutely not joking about the Gleneagles breakfast – we’re talking cheese boards, a smoked salmon section, mimosa section and so much more. Make time to enjoy it.</p>

<p>It’s a good stomach lining for the next stop too at <a href="https://theglenturret.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">The Glenturret</a>, Scotland’s oldest working distillery. We’d heartily recommend having someone else do the driving so you can enjoy a dram on an afternoon distillery tour. It’s also home to <a href="https://www.theglenturretrestaurant.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><strong>The Glenturret Lalique</strong></a>, a two-star temple to theatre, flavour and craftsmanship. Expect drama, storytelling and plates that feel like edible art before returning to Gleneagles for the best sleep of your life.</p>



<p>If whisky&#8217;s not your thing, you could choose to head north instead, through Highland Perthshire to <a href="https://killiecrankiehouse.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><strong>Killiecrankie House</strong></a>, one of Scotland’s newest Michelin-starred restaurants and one of its most thrilling. Set in a beautifully restored Victorian villa near Pitlochry, this intimate restaurant-with-rooms champions exceptional local produce, open-fire cooking and quietly confident technique. Dinner here feels deeply rooted in place – refined but relaxed, and a perfect bridge between Lowland polish and Highland wildness.</p>



<p>This place is made for staying the night, so go for it; you’ll want to linger.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-highlands-nbsp"><strong>Highlands&nbsp;</strong></h2>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-day-six-go-big-or-go-home">Day six: go big or go home</h3>



<p>You could call it quits after day five, but there is more. From Perthshire, strike west and north through some of Scotland’s most jaw-dropping scenery – lochs, mountains and long, cinematic roads – to <a href="https://www.thetorridon.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">The Torridon</a> in Wester Ross.</p>

Overlooking Upper Loch Torridon, the restaurant focuses on Highland produce with classical roots and contemporary finesse. Expect immaculate technique, deep flavours and a setting so dramatic it almost competes with the food. Almost.</p>



<p>Stay at The Torridon itself – a grand Highland lodge where roaring fires, sea air and post-dinner drams are all part of the experience.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-isle-of-skye-nbsp"><strong>Isle of Skye&nbsp;</strong></h2>

<p>If you want to go <em>full cinematic</em>, add on the detour to the Isle of Skye. It’s totally worth it. The island has always punched above its weight on the food front, thanks to its exceptional access to gorgeous seafood, but it’s having a particular moment right now, thanks to chefs like Calum Montgomery at <a href="https://www.edinbanelodge.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Edinbane Lodge</a> (where we recommend you spend your first night) and <a href="https://www.cafecuil.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Cafe Cuil</a>’s <a href="https://scotland.muddystilettos.co.uk/eat/whats-cooking-clare-coghill-cafe-cuil-isle-of-skye/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Clare Coghill</a>. </p>

<p>Spend the next day mooching around Portree, or if you fancy something more vigorous, take a hike – the Old Man of Storr is a classic, but there’s no shortage of routes to explore the island’s moody landscape. Settle in for the main Michelin event that evening at <a href="https://www.lochbay-restaurant.co.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><strong>Loch Bay</strong></a> in Stein, a seafood-focused restaurant offering croft-style cooking with real soul.</p>
