The Michelin Stars for 2026 have landed and Scotland’s culinary scene is looking as tasty as ever, with 15 restaurants making the cut. Yay!

Now, we love a nine-course tasting menu served on pottery you’re slightly scared to touch. But sometimes you want a brilliant night out that doesn’t require a quiet word with your bank manager. Somewhere for a relaxed date night, a long lunch with a pal, or just really, really good food — minus the full Michelin price tag.

Enter: the sisters to the stars.

If you like the vibe at Timberyard…

Central Edinburgh‘s Timberyard has had a star every year since 2023. Think Scottish produce, beautifully served in a converted 19th century warehouse.

Another 19th century building – this time an old inn in Edinburgh’s Abbeyhill neighbourhood. It’s relaxed neighbourhood dining done very well — or just pop in for a glass of biodynamic wine and a few snacks at the downstairs wine bar. Dangerous, in the best way.

Warehouses are a theme here. Haze has a space in what used to be George Brown’s warehouse at The Shore in Leith. The pitch? Coffee, wine and tinned fish. Sounds niche, tastes brilliant. Trust us – it totally works. See our review.

One of Edinburgh’s hottest new openings at the tail end of last year and we are itching to get a table. Dogstar has former Timberyard chef James Murray at the helm, along with help on drinks from the team behind Nauticus. A daily changing menu – we’ve heard great things.

If you like the vibe at The Kitchin…

A restaurant at the forefront of Scotland’s fine dining scene for several years, chef Tom Kitchin brought fine French-style dining to Leith in 2006 and has held a star for it ever since.

As you might guess from the name, The Scran and Scallie is a gastropub nestled in the bustling neighbourhood of Stockbridge. With a Michelin Bib Gourmand to its name, it serves elevated classics – burgers, fish and chips – and yes, it’s kid-friendly (if you must).

Another Bib Gourmand. Another gastropub. This time in Gullane. The Bonnie Badger is Kitchin’s third restaurant: A pub with rooms, celebrating local produce and its seaside setting. Ideal for a weekend escape where dinner is very much the main event.

Chef Roberta Hall-McCarron has quietly established herself as one of Scotland’s leading chefs. She was working with Tom Kitchin when she appeared on the Great British Menu and that led her to take the leap, first opening The Little Chartroom, and since then, Eleanore and Ardfern. Ardfern in Leith is our pick – an all-day place to eat, you can go for brunch, Sunday dinner or a glass of wine with oysters and it’ll all be spot on.

If you like the vibe at LYLA…

The epic 10-course tasting menu at LYLA in Edinburgh is possibly one of Muddy’s most memorable meals. Every mouthful was exceptional. If you can get a table, this is definitely worth the treat.

The brains and skill behind LYLA are those of chef Stuart Ralston and it wasn’t his first rodeo. To his name he has small plates sharing restaurant Noto and Tipo (both with a Michelin Bib Gourmand). Tipo tips it for us thanks to our love of all things Italian. Expect arancini, pappardelle and delicious cannoli.

The latest addition to Ralston’s restaurants in Edinburgh is Vinette. It’s a Parisian-style bar à vin offering bistro-style dishes (via a wee detour to the US – read our review and you’ll understand). Bonus points for the excellent basement cocktail bar, Vivien.

If you like the vibe at Restaurant Andrew Fairlie…

One of only two restaurants in Scotland to hold two Michelin stars, chef Andrew Fairlie’s legacy continues strong, even after his passing.

It’s not the only fine dining option on the table at Gleneagles though. Also on site is The Strathearn, the hotel’s original restaurant dating back to 1924. It more than holds up, with candlelight and live piano music setting the scene for a menu of modern Scottish dining.

Okay, not exactly lemonade money — it has a star of its own — but hear us out. Executive chef Lorna McNee trained under Andrew Fairlie, and Cail Bruich in Glasgow‘s West End has capped its tasting menu at £125. Serious quality, slightly more accessible. See our review. Speaking of which…

The restaurateurs behind Cail Bruich are Paul and Chris Charalambous and it’s not their only venture. West End neighbourhood spot Epicures and Brett in Kelvinbridge are also on their roster. We’re pointing you to their fourth venture. The Clarence, which was newly awarded a Bib Gourmand by Michelin this year, a pub and dining room praised by inspectors for its “boldly flavoured dishes”.

If you like the vibe at Heron…

When Sam Yorke and pal Tomás Gormley opened Heron at Leith the pair were only 26 and 28 respectively. It meant Sam was the youngest Scottish chef with a Michelin star, an accolade the restaurant continues to hold.

Tomás has left Sam to it, getting involved instead with three restaurant ventures across Edinburgh – Cardinal, The Gilded Saloon and Skua, which holds a Bib Gourmand. Small and intimate, it’s the kind of place where the menu lists ingredients for each dish. A celebration of produce, make sure you try the fried chicken!

Chef Henry Dobson has an impressive roster of stages behind him: Noma in Copenhagen being one. Heron’s on that list too. In Stockbridge he’s opened his own place, taking field to table dining as far as possible – with tables made by him from fallen trees on his family’s farm to ceramics made from the soil of the land.

If you like the vibe at UNALOME by Graeme Cheevers…

Holding a star since 2022, one of the ways Unalome in Glasgow shines is by offering a distinct vegetarian tasting menu alongside its omnivorous one – a win for anyone who loves fine dining, but would rather dodge meat.

Unalome’s sister restaurant sits pretty at Cameron House on Loch Lomond. Same meticulous cooking, added wow-factor setting. Book a room, make a night of it — you won’t regret it.
