<p>It&#8217;s no secret that Scotland has some of the best food producers and drinks makers in the land. Unsurprising then, its restaurant scene is having a proper moment. Proof? The UK’s leading independent restaurant guide, SquareMeal, has just revealed its UK Top 100 Restaurants for 2026, and more than 10 per cent of them are north of the border. Not bad going at all.</p>



<p>Edinburgh, in particular, is on fire. Six of Scotland’s entries are in the capital, including shiny new additions Moss in Stockbridge and Dogstar in Leith — the latter a seriously impressive achievement given it only opened its doors last autumn.</p>



<p>But this isn’t just an Edinburgh love-in. From village pubs worth a pilgrimage to low-key city gems that locals like to keep quiet about, there’s excellent scran to be had all over Scotland. Looking for your next great meal out? We’ve done the homework. Here’s where to book.</p>

<p>If Edinburgh dining royalty were a thing, Stuart Ralston would be firmly seated at the top table. While his portfolio across the city is impressive, <strong>LYLA</strong> is the jewel in the crown. Seafood-forward and exquisitely executed, it offers an extended tasting menu showcasing the very best line-caught fish and sustainable shellfish from the Scottish Isles. Every course is a little showstopper. Bucket-list dining, no question.</p>

<p>Roberta Hall-McCarron is another heavyweight of Edinburgh’s food scene, and <strong>The Little Chartroom</strong> is her signature act. Now happily settled into its Leith home, it’s confident, calm and completely sure of itself — with a short, sharp menu where vegetables are very much main characters, not afterthoughts. A total gem.</p>

<p>Next door you’ll find <strong>Ardfern</strong>, Roberta’s more relaxed, all-day offering. This is the kind of place you pop into for brunch, blink, and suddenly it’s 6pm and you’ve ordered wine and are absolutely staying for dinner. The food is just as good as its neighbour’s, but the vibe is breezier — perfect for long, unplanned catch ups with pals.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-dogstar-edinburgh"><a href="https://dogstarleith.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Dogstar</a>, Edinburgh</h3>



<p>An old boozer reimagined, the team behind <strong>Dogstar</strong> are bucking the trend on pub closures. Dogstar only opened in the autumn of 2025, but the word on the ground made it immediately clear that it was going to be a hit. With James Murray (formerly of Timberyard) leading the kitchen and a drinks team from Nauticus keeping glasses topped up, it was always going to be one to watch. That it’s already landed on this list? Entirely unsurprising.</p>

<p>Dinner at Scotland’s oldest working whisky distillery? Go on then. The <strong>Glenturret Lalique</strong> also happens to be a two Michelin-starred restaurant. Executive Chef Mark Donald delivers menus that evolve with the seasons and which take their cues straight from the surrounding landscape. Local produce, serious technique, and if you fancy really leaning into it, you can stay the night at <strong><a href="https://scotland.muddystilettos.co.uk/little-black-book/directory/the-glenturret-distillery/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Aberturret House</a></strong>. A full day (and night) well spent. </p>

<p>If you know, you know. Over in Pollokshields, <strong>Big Counter</strong> is resolutely unflashy — no website, minimal blurb, zero shouting about how good it is. And yet. Word of mouth has done all the heavy lifting, thanks to French bistro vibes, homemade sausages, a cult roast chicken, natural wine and excellent steak. Low-key, high reward.</p>

<p>Kilconquhar is small. Think: a church, a pub… and not much else. But that pub just happens to be <strong>The Kinneuchar Inn</strong>, which right now is quietly serving up one of the best dining experiences in Scotland. Slightly off the usual East Neuk crawl, it’s worth every mile for its daily-changing à la carte menu, built around produce from the Balcaskie Estate and a tight circle of brilliant suppliers. Add in dog-friendly credentials and proper local-pub vibes, and honestly — what’s not to love?</p>

<p>Bringing a taste of the Mediterranean to frequently soggy Finnieston feels almost saintly — and chef Rosie Healey is doing the Lord’s work. <strong>Gloriosa</strong> is joyful, generous cooking at its best. Go for the excellent-value set lunch or settle in for a long, wine-fuelled dinner of sharing plates. Either way, you’ll leave happy. </p>

<p>Tucked away between the New Town and Stockbridge, <strong>Cardinal</strong> is quietly confident — the sort of place that trusts people will find it. And they do. Chef Tomas Gormley is celebrating Scottish produce with real flair: scallops, trout, venison, the works. Whether you opt for the £55 three-course lunch (because sometimes you simply must) or one of the tasting menus, it’s a proper treat.</p>

<p><strong>Moss</strong> takes farm-to-table and absolutely runs with it. Chef-owner Henry Dobson sources over 90 ingredients from his family’s farm — and yes, even the tables were handmade by Henry himself from trees felled on the land. The ceramics? Made using soil from the farm. It’s immersive, thoughtful and pushing the boundaries of what local sourcing can be — with delicious, often surprising results.</p>
