<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-lowdown">THE LOWDOWN</h2>



<p>It’s a properly dreich Glasgow night when I surface at Hillhead, but mercifully Cail Bruich is barely a five-minute wander from the underground. Once inside, all thoughts of horizontal rain are instantly forgotten.</p>

<p>Chef Director Lorna McNee has been running the show since 2020, arriving from Restaurant Andrew Fairlie at Gleneagles – no small CV line. Just five months later, she secured a Michelin star for the restaurant (Glasgow’s first in 19 years, no less), and it’s been safely pinned there ever since. Add in three AA Rosettes and you start to see the pattern.</p>



<p>This is cooking that celebrates Scotland’s larder without shouting about it – ingredient-led, technically spot-on and quietly modern, with confidence that doesn’t need fireworks.</p>

<p>From the moment you step through the door, the welcome is warm and unshowy. Cail Bruich is an intimate little number – just 28 covers – which immediately ups the sense that you’re in good hands.</p>



<p>The seating curves gently around the space, with bespoke wooden panelling, greenery and soft lighting giving it a relaxed, cocooning feel. Polished but intimate. Smart and orderly but without the stiffness of bright lighting and gloved service. The kind of place where you know from the off that it’s going to be good. </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-scoff-amp-quaff">SCOFF &amp; QUAFF</h2>



<p>Menus here shift with the seasons. I visited for the winter tasting menu – six beautifully paced courses, plus snacks to start and sweet treats to finish. It’s a long, luxurious evening, the best kind.</p>

<p>Highlights? Oh, where to start. Beetroot with taramasalata ice cream (yes, really – oh boy, was it good). Hand-dived Orkney scallops with preserved tomato, blood orange and smoked eel. Scrabster turbot with morels, black truffle and Madeira. And Stobo Estate sika deer with quince, chicory and bacon that had me seriously contemplating licking the plate.</p>

<p>The bread course alone – pillowy milk bread with chive butter and silken slivers of Creedy Carver duck – could have sent me home happy.</p>



<p>Wine-wise, Restaurant Manager Simon McAtamney had everything covered. His pairings were spot on, delivered with just the right balance of knowledge and ease – geeky detail if you want it, or simply <em>trust me, you’ll love this</em> if you don’t.</p>



<p>Every dish arrived perfectly presented, with gentle guidance on how to tackle courses that had multiple parts. </p>

<p>Dessert brought a little theatre too: lemon and lavender honey curd with olive oil and salted milk, finished with honey drizzled tableside. A chocolate mi-cuit arrived on a bed of pebbles – some of which turned out to be edible, because – well, why not? Each course went way beyond its succinct description on the menu. It was a meal with a sense of generosity and joy, and a clear exuberance for food.</p>



<p>It was a Proustian experience – by which I mean completely memorable… and that there were actually warm macaroons.</p>

<p>Cail Bruich is in one of the buzziest bits of Glasgow – the University of Glasgow is nearby with the Kelvingrove Museum, as is the Botanic Gardens if you’re in the area for the day. The music and arts venue Òran Mór&nbsp; is just a couple of doors up the road.&nbsp;</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-muddy-verdict">THE MUDDY VERDICT</h2>



<p>GOOD FOR: A celebratory dinner, like a birthday or a work promotion, or an event that feels special – Valentine’s Day, anyone?</p>



<p>NOT FOR: Eating fast and heading on elsewhere. Dining here is an experience to be savoured. And allergies can be managed, but the small size of the restaurant means they can&#8217;t accommodate dairy-free and vegan dietary restrictions.</p>



<p>THE DAMAGE: The tasting menu is priced at £125, a lower price which was introduced in summer 2025. It’s still treatsy, but honestly, for food this good, it’s really accessible.</p>
