Edinburgh in August is very much a city where even a large cupboard might be playing host to a performance of some kind. This year there are 3,649 shows and 53,884 performances across 258 venues, ranging from theatres and music halls to basements and shipping containers.

Thankfully, it’s possible to narrow the field of your search and one way to do this is to understand the vibe of the main venue providers for the Fringe festival. Each of them have curated programmes with a distinct vibe – whether that’s stand-up, international theatre, family shows or something more niche. Once you clock that, the whole thing becomes far easier to navigate.

Consider this your must-have cribsheet.

The big four

Pleasance: for emerging comedy and future big names

The Pleasance has a reputation for being a powerhouse for comedy, particularly up-and-coming stand-ups and sketch acts on the cusp of breaking through. Of course, you’ll find big names here (the outdoor bars are great for celeb spotting) but the emphasis is on discovery as much as polish.

Muddy tip: Though the centre of gravity might be comedy, there’s more to Pleasance than that. There’s theatre at Pleasance too, which is often contemporary and accessible.

Rory Marshall: Thank You for the Opportunity – character comedy from a rising name and exactly the kind of “see them before they get huge” act Pleasance has built its reputation on.
Cruising – a queer debut play about polyamory, protest and passion that shows off Pleasance’s strong theatre programme alongside all the stand-up.
Madame Chandelier’s Grand Theft Opera – a family-friendly reimagining of The Magic Flute from a cabaret performer turned children’s entertainer, and a good example of how broad Pleasance’s programme really is.

Underbelly: slick, crowd-pleasing variety

If you’re looking for highly produced, accessible entertainment look no further.

Underbelly is the home of Variety performances. At their venues centred around George Square and the Cowgate you’ll find a mix of stand-up, cabaret, musical theatre and spectacle, with a knack for shows that have wide appeal.

Muddy tip: The Circus Hub on the Meadows is what gives Underbelly its unique take: a space for large-scale physical theatre, clowning and circus work.

Gilded Balloon: female-led comedy and theatre with a point of view

In three words: young, fun, vibrant. Gilded Balloon is another key spot for stand up as well as sketch shows and comedy plays. But its distinctive comes from its focus on women and LGBTQ+ voices.

Muddy tip: If the Fringe’s comedy programme can sometimes feels a bit like a sausage-fest, the Gilded Balloon will offer you the respite and alternative voices you need.

Aoife Dunne: Good Grief – after selling out across Ireland and the UK, Dunne brings her acclaimed debut back to the Fringe, blending stand-up, theatrical storytelling and emotional honesty. Funny, warm and a great example of the kind of distinctive voice Gilded Balloon champions.
Amanda Knox: Cartwheel – part comedy show, part reflection on motherhood, identity and public scrutiny (yes, she is THAT Amanda Knox), this is exactly the sort of conversation-starting, female-led work that gives Gilded Balloon its edge.

Assembly: the all-rounder

One of the longest-running multi-venue operators and still one of the most wide-ranging in terms of its programme, Assembly hosts over 200 shows at the Fringe. You’ll find theatre, comedy, and dance here, often with higher production values. It should be your go to for big household names, large entertaining shows and seeing major names early in their careers.

Muddy tip: Assembly has a particularly strong children’s and family programme and if you’re looking to see Scottish theatre in particular, they run the Assembly Roxy Theatre Award for new Scottish theatre.

Smaller (but perfectly formed) venues

Summerhall: experimental, international and idea-led

Summerhall has a strong reputation for its critically acclaimed theatre programme. It’s a place where boundaries are stretched and you’ll find avant-garde new work, contemporary theatre and performances from international companies. If you’re looking for stand up, this is not the spot for you, but if you want something a bit different, you’re in the right place.

ROLEPLAY – a new one-woman play from Hannah Reilly that feels very aligned with Summerhall’s reputation for contemporary, boundary-pushing work.

Zoo Venues: international theatre focus

Another theatre hotspot, Zoo is a slightly under the radar venue host but one absolutely worth exploring. The programme is entirely made up of performances from outwith the UK. You’ll find physical theatre and visual storytelling here, all from a range of global perspectives.

Check out

Soft Spot – contemporary circus with a theatrical heart from Finnish and Danish company OLO. Built around object manipulation, physical theatre and an eye-watering 300 wine glasses, the show turns balancing acts into something surprisingly emotional – making it a perfect example of Zoo’s international outlook and love of visual, non-traditional storytelling.

Traverse Theatre: serious new writing

Throughout the year Edinburgh’s Traverse Theatre is a space for new theatre and at the Fringe it continues that theme, providing a cornerstone in the Fringe programme for scripted theatre and new writing, often with a political or literary edge.

You’ll not find light entertainment – but if you want to be ahead of the game when it comes to plays that everyone will rave about when they transfer to London or beyond, this is where to get those bragging rights.

For Dolores – from award-winning Irish theatre company Fishamble, this new play follows Réaltín and Mo, one Irish and one Scottish, as they party, play and blaze their way through the Edinburgh student dream. It’s the kind of character-led new writing Traverse audiences tend to spot early before everyone else starts talking about it.

theSpace: grassroots theatre and artists

The Fringe is known for being a place where grassroots theatre and student productions get to shine. And the venue where you can find it? theSpace. With a large and varied programme, you’ll find a lot of young and emerging acts here, making it great for new writers and ones to watch.

Check out

Afro Acrobatic Arts – A Ghanian troupe of performers bring a mix of physicality to what sounds like a highly energetic show. Dance, music, performing arts, acrobatics, limbo, contortion, suspension and juggling – you name it, they’ll be doing it.

Greenside: emerging theatre and musicals

Much like theSpace, Greenside is a reliable hub for scripted theatre and new writing, with musicals, comedy plays and, occasionally, poetry.

Check out

Most of My Moms Are Gay – an original comedy musical and Edinburgh debut that fits Greenside’s emerging-musical identity.

C venues: international and physical theatre

Independent is the watchword here. There’s a whole mix of different kinds of shows on offer at C venues – international theatre, physical performance, adaptations of classic drama – making it a good place to pick something if you’re feeling eclectic, or if you’re looking for something a little different to the norm.

The Electric Cabaret – a compendium of great new acts in a late night show blending comedy, circus, burlesque, bands, live art and speciality acts from across the Fringe, with a different line-up every night.

Just the Tonic: for comedy, especially when it’s late

This is where to head for when it’s 10pm and you’ve just got your second wind. A comedy-first operator (though they do host some theatre too), they’re like a Festival version of a classic comedy club. That means you can expect stand-up, mixed bill showcases and shows that go deep into the night.

The Stand and Monkey Barrel: comedy purists

If it’s comedy comedy comedy for you, then you can’t go far wrong with checking out the programmes for The Stand Comedy Club and Monkey Barrel Comedy. Laser focused on the laughs, they feature almost exclusively comedy acts – great circuit comedians, mixed bills and a bit of musical comedy every now and then to mix it up. Looking for laughs? These are two of your safest bets.

Marjolein Robertson: Clouds (WIP) – one of Scotland’s most distinctive comedy voices returns with a work-in-progress blending stand-up, folklore and live fiddle music. A finalist for the Sean Lock Comedy Award and BBC New Comedy Awards, Robertson has built a reputation for turning stories from Shetland into something surreal, funny and unexpectedly transporting.
Huge Davies: Sleep Paralysis Princess – the Edinburgh Comedy Award nominee returns with the brilliantly oddball mix of deadpan stand-up, original songs and low-tech musical invention that’s made him a cult Fringe favourite. This new show tackles a decade of chronic sleep deprivation while wearing what is, apparently, a giant keyboard watch.

Free Fringe: comedy, spoken word and anything-goes

It’s easy to spend a small fortune in not much time at all during the Fringe. Thank goodness then for the PBH Free Fringe and Laughing Horse Free Festival. Dominated by stand-up and comedy showcases, these can also be some of the best places to find spoken word, poetry and experimental formats. Yes, the production values are lower, but the reward is in what you discover.
