<p>Set on the banks of the River Tweed in the Borders, Melrose is a tranquil little town with a big personality. Surrounded by lovely countryside and with an atmospheric ruined abbey, it&#8217;s a genteel place but with lots going on. The rugby Melrose Sevens began here in 1883, an international sporting tournament that continues to this day, and just one of the many events and festivals on the town&#8217;s calendar. Melrose has a reputation as a foodie destination and punches well above its weight for eating out and independent shops. And if you find yourself yearning for a big city fix, a restored rail link means Edinburgh is less than an hour away.</p>

The <a href="https://twelvetriangles.co.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Twelve Triangles</a> bakery serves delicious home-made cakes and expect the kids to drag you into <a href="https://simplydeliciousofmelrose.co.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Simply Delicious</a> for the sweeties in old-fashioned jars, as well as ice cream – try the apple crumble, hot or not it is lush.</p>

<p>Browsing the many independent shops and boutiques in Melrose town centre is a joy and there is on-street parking as well as nearby car parks. <a href="https://thecrafters.co.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">The Crafters</a> is a co-operative of craft workers selling handmade gifts such as cards, knitwear, jewellery and silk. There are delicatessens, galleries, gift shops, an excellent bookshop (<a href="https://www.thereadingroommelrose.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">The Reading Room</a>) and tastings at <a href="https://abbeyfinewines.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Abbey Fine Wines </a>as well as intriguing antique stores, like <a href="https://www.facebook.com/LyndochAntiquesJewellery/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Lyndoch</a>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-health-amp-wellbeing">HEALTH &amp; WELLBEING</h2>



<p>You don’t have to be a mad rugby fan to live here, but it certainly helps;  <a href="https://www.melroserugby.org/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Melrose Rugby Football Club</a> is one of the most prestigious in Scotland and as well as regular fixtures, there are <a href="https://www.melroserugby.org/cgi-rugby-camps" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Youth Rugby Camps</a>. At <a href="https://g10sports.co.uk/#sportsactivitieseventshome" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">G10 Sports</a>, imaginations can run wild playing border bubble football in inflatable orbs or woodland archery. Walking and <a href="https://www.scotborders.gov.uk/parks-outdoors/cycling" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">cycling</a> trails are very popular and the Border towns are also famous for <a href="https://www.scotborders.gov.uk/parks-outdoors/horse-riding-routes" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">horse-riding</a>, in particular the Common Ridings held annually in summer.</p>



<p>For fitness, join pilates classes at <a href="https://www.pilates.co.uk/Amanda_Richard_Funtastic_Fitness.html" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">St Boswells Church Hall </a>or body sculpting at <a href="https://www.coresculptuk.co.uk/studio" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">CoreSculptUK</a>. Luxurious health spa <a href="https://www.stobocastle.co.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Stobo Castle</a> is set in a 19th-century castle, while in nearby Kelso, <a href="https://schlosshotel-roxburghe.com/en/home" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Schloss Roxburghe</a> has recently been refurbished with a swim-in, swim-out pool at the contemporary spa in picturesque grounds as well as a championship golf course and country sports centre.</p>



<p>For a stroll, there are plenty of walks by the River Tweed and for something more energetic, both the <a href="https://www.walkhighlands.co.uk/southern-upland-way.shtml" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Southern Upland Way</a> and the <a href="https://www.scotborders.gov.uk/downloads/download/353/borders_abbey_walks" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Borders Abbeys Way</a> loop around the town.</p>

<p>The Melrose Sevens has been moved from its traditional April date to May Bank Holiday, so a bit warmer and great for socialising even if scrums leave you numb. Another big occasion, <a href="https://www.melrosefestival.co.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Melrose Festival</a> is held in the third full week of June each year with highlights such as junior and senior ride-outs, a cycle ride and BBQ, crowning of the festival queen, and a ball and sports day. Book yourself out for the <a href="https://bordersbookfestival.org/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Borders Book Festival</a>, also held mid-June each year in Harmony Gardens, which attracts well-known and local authors, while the <a href="https://www.facebook.com/melroselitsoc/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Melrose Literary Society</a> organises regular events. Then there are <a href="https://rivertweed.org.uk/news/ladies-fly-fishing-days-on-the-river-tweed-2025/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Lady’s Fishing Days</a> on the Tweed, <a href="https://www.nts.org.uk/visit/places/priorwood-garden" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Priorwood Apple Day</a> and <a href="https://www.scottsabbotsford.com/whats-on/christmas-at-abbotsford" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Christmas at Abbotsford</a> – we told you it’s a happening place!</p>

<p>Dating back to 1136, <a href="https://www.historicenvironment.scot/visit-a-place/places/melrose-abbey/prices-times/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Melrose Abbey</a> will be a regular haunt if you move here, not just for its historic architectural detail (engravings include saints, dragons and bizarrely a pig playing the bagpipes), but because it’s the burial place of Robert the Bruce’s heart, which is sealed in a casket. <a href="https://www.trimontium.co.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Trimontium Museum</a> reveals the Roman history of the town in an immersive VR experience and you’ll get a good view of the Eildon Hills from the ancient 1826 <a href="https://www.nationaltransporttrust.org.uk/heritage-sites/heritage-detail/gattonside-suspension-bridge-melrose" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Gattonside suspension bridge</a> – it still has original signs advising you not to swing it too much or risk ending up in prison!</p>



<p><a href="https://www.nts.org.uk/visit/places/priorwood-garden" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Priorwood Garden</a> (free entry and cared for by NTS) is dedicated to growing flowers that can be dried and they’re sold at the visitor centre. Among the apple trees in the orchard is a variety called <a href="https://www.nts.org.uk/stories/heritage-apples-at-priorwood-garden" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">White Melrose</a>, thought to have been cultivated by former monks at the abbey. <a href="https://www.nts.org.uk/visit/places/harmony-garden" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Harmony House &amp; Garden </a>(also looked after by NTS and free) is another tranquil oasis with a grand Georgian mansion popular as a wedding venue. And don’t forget nearby <a href="https://www.scottsabbotsford.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Abbotsford</a>, once home to Sir Walter Scott and a great place to walk the dog as well as nosy around the house, especially the amazing library.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-culture">CULTURE</h2>



<p>Big enough for shows, concerts, dinners and ceilidhs, the <a href="https://www.nationaltheatrescotland.com/venues/melrose-corn-exchange" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Melrose Corn Exchange</a> and local <a href="https://www.liveborders.org.uk/town-halls/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Borders Town Halls</a> attract a few household names such as comedians Jason Manford and Jimeoin. The <a href="https://www.melrosemusicfestival.co.uk/2025-programme" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Melrose Music Festival</a> in Sept blends chamber orchestra, choirs, jazz and a children’s programme. And – oh yes – Melrose is an easy train ride from the world’s biggest <a href="https://www.eif.co.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">International Festival</a> and <a href="https://www.edfringe.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Fringe </a>that happens in Edinburgh every year – along with all the other city entertainment.</p>

<p>Legend has it that King Arthur is buried in the Eildon Hills just outside Melrose.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-commute">COMMUTE</h2>



<p>The recently restored <a href="https://www.scotrail.co.uk/inspiration-hub/great-scenic-rail-journeys/borders-railway-edinburgh-tweedbank" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Borders Railway</a> runs direct from Edinburgh Waverley to Tweedbank in 55 mins, with a further two-mile walk, cycle, bus (67 or 68) or drive to Melrose. Reach Edinburgh by car in around 60 mins (unless it’s rush hour in the capital) or Glasgow in just under 2hrs. Direct bus services are also available to Edinburgh (51) or neighbouring Galashiels (X95, 67, 68), from where you can connect to Berwick and Carlisle. For London, the nearest international airport is Edinburgh, or there are train connections at Edinburgh Waverley, Berwick or Carlisle.</p>
