<p>It has a pink castle, need we say more? Inverness is the capital of the Highlands and an important hub for all that lies north. It’s a picturesque city, with lovely old stone buildings and the River Ness running through it and always close by. There are just enough shops, restaurants, cafés and bars to make it a bustling place without being overwhelming, and it has an easily walkable centre. Close to the infamous Loch Ness, the Caledonian Canal and Moray Firth, you will be spoilt for choice of how to spend weekends – otter, dolphin or monster spotting?</p>

<p>If you&#8217;re a foodie, the city isn&#8217;t short of spots to keep you satisfied – it can be tricky to find a table at the top spots during the tourist season. <a href="https://www.rocpoolrestaurant.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Rocpool </a>by the River Ness is a stalwart serving locally sourced deliciousness and has a Michelin Bib Gourmand; the <a href="https://riverhouseinverness.co.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">River House</a> is renowned for its seafood and service; while <a href="https://www.mustardseedrestaurant.co.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Mustard Seed</a> has great food and an outdoor balcony. </p>



<p>For something fancy, <a href="http://nesswalk.com/dining" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Torrish</a> at the Ness Walk Hotel offers one of the city&#8217;s first tasting menus. At the other end of the spectrum (i.e. when you have kids in tow), <a href="https://coyoteburger.co.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Coyote Burger</a> or <a href="https://www.cheeseandtomatin.co.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Cheese &amp; Tomatin</a> for pizza should hit the spot. <a href="https://houhoumei.co.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Hou Hou Mei</a> offers a modern take on Cantonese food (their name means very very yummy!). The new Saltire Bistro in the castle will be one to book when it opens, while just opposite, <a href="https://cafe1.net/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Café 1</a> has a wee menu for younger guests. </p>



<p>If good coffee is an absolute priority (and when is it not?) there&#8217;s no shortage of great spots – <a href="https://thevictorianmarket.co.uk/businesses/milk-bar/">Milk Bar</a> and <a href="https://grainandgrind.co.uk/locations/inverness/?srsltid=AfmBOoo6uD_gHzl-tnkYkUcbs5OKyzz8XKIeTDvYACino5B-tutYG0kh" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Grain and Grind</a> are both linked to local indie roasteries, <a href="https://birch.coffee/pages/visit" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Birch</a> and <a href="https://www.xoko.co.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Xoko</a> will sort you out on the pastry front, and at <a href="https://www.perkcafe.co.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Perk</a> espresso martinis ease the transition from day to night. </p>



<p>For pints and pizza you can&#8217;t go wrong at <a href="https://www.blackislebrewery.com/visit-us/inverness-bar" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Black Isle Brewery</a>&#8216;s city centre tap room. <a href="https://hootanannyinverness.co.uk/food-drink/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><u>Hootananny</u></a> is not just for Hogmanay – it’s also the name of an award-winning bar with good food and live music and located two miles out of town. The <a href="https://clachnaharryinn.co.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Clachnaharry Inn</a> has views of the Moray Firth from the garden. </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-shop">SHOP</h2>



<p>There are lots of boutiques and knitwear shops in the city centre. <a href="https://www.highlandhouseoffraser.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Highland House of Fraser </a>is the go-to for your kilt needs, while <a href="https://www.judithglue.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Judith Glue</a> champions chunky jumpers and local produce from Orkney. <a href="https://leakeysbookshop.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Leakey’s</a> is a legendary second-hand book shop which resembles Hogwart’s library. </p>



<p><a href="https://eastgateshopping.co.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Eastgate Shopping Centre</a> is a modern mall with high street faves such as <a href="https://eastgateshopping.co.uk/shops/white-stuff/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">White Stuff</a>, <a href="https://www.next.co.uk/storelocator/invernessretailpark-eastfield/0651?msockid=0240f27581d0658d3ff5e73880126489" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Next </a>and <a href="https://eastgateshopping.co.uk/shops/joules/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Joules</a> as well as jewellers, shoe shops and <a href="https://www.cafferys.co.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Caffreys </a>selling designer brands for men. Dating back to 1890, the <a href="https://thevictorianmarket.co.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Victorian Market</a> is definitely worth browsing (especially in the rain) for its indies, delis and food and drink hall.</p>

<p>Children will love the swimming pool and slides at <a href="https://www.highlifehighland.com/il/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Inverness Leisure</a>, while there are plenty of parks and the <a href="https://www.theledgeclimbing.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Ledge Climbing Gym</a> to burn off energy. For serious R&amp;R check out the wellness centres at <a href="https://www.bannatyne.co.uk/health-club/inverness" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Bannatyne Health Club &amp; Spa</a>, <a href="https://www.sleepingbeautysalon.com/margaret-street-inverness-salon-new" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Sleeping Beauty Salon</a> and the <a href="https://www.kingsmillshotel.com/spa/spa-facilities/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Kingsclub Spa</a>. Fishing is available with <a href="https://www.invernessanglingclub.co.uk/fishing/permits/ness-permits" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">permits</a> for the River Ness although you may get a bigger bite than you bargained for with Nessie lurking nearby! And forget that Morzine booking – there is skiing and snowboarding on your doorstep here in the <a href="https://www.cairngormmountain.co.uk/the-ski-area/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Cairngorms</a> near Aviemore and <a href="https://www.nevisrange.co.uk/activities/ski-board/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Nevis Range</a> at Fort William; the latter is also an important centre for <a href="https://www.nevisrange.co.uk/activities/bike/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">mountain biking</a>.</p>



<p>This is one of the best city centres to escape to greenery – just cross the suspension bridges for a walk on the islands in the centre of the River Ness, a calm oasis away from the hustle and bustle. Or for long-distance routes, circumnavigate the 80-mile <a href="https://lochness360.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Loch Ness 360</a> for ultimate monster viewing or <a href="https://www.highland.gov.uk/greatglenway/info/3/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">The Great Glen Way</a> stretching 78 miles to Fort William.</p>

<p>There are loads of events here for people to come together. Annual festivals include the <a href="https://www.visitinvernesslochness.com/food-and-drink-festival-2025" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Inverness and Loch Ness Food &amp; Drink Festival </a>in Feb/ March; the <a href="https://invernesshighlandgames.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Highland Games</a> in July; the <a href="https://blackisleshow.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Black Isle Show</a> and <a href="https://www.moyfieldsportsfair.co.uk/what-s-on" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Moy Country Fair</a> in Aug; the <a href="https://www.lochnessmarathon.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Loch Ness Marathon</a> in Sept and <a href="https://nessbookfest.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">NessBookFest</a> in Oct.</p>



<p><a href="https://rokzkoolacademy.org/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">RokZkool Academy</a> is a community-led charity to help people reach their potential through music, friendships and workshops. At <a href="https://eastgateshopping.co.uk/shops/halo/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Halo</a> (Highland Action for Little Ones) in Eastgate Shopping Centre, donations of both new and pre-loved items are encouraged to ensure every child in need feels valued. </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-nearby-attractions">NEARBY ATTRACTIONS</h2>



<p>The exciting news is that the castle, formerly home to the prison and sheriff court, is being opened to visitors for the first time from late summer. The<a href="https://invernesscastle.scot/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"> Inverness Castle Experience</a> promises to be an enthralling interactive exhibition showing what makes the Highlands of Scotland a special place to live, work and travel to. In the grounds stands a monument in honour of heroine Flora MacDonald, who helped Bonnie Prince Charlie to evade capture after his defeat at the <a href="https://www.nts.org.uk/visit/places/culloden/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Battle of Culloden</a> in 1746 – the nearby battleground can be visited year-round. </p>



<p>Loch Ness is on the doorstep for ongoing monster spotting (as well as walks), with the ruins of <a href="https://www.historicenvironment.scot/visit-a-place/places/urquhart-castle/prices-times/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Urquhart Castle</a> and the <a href="https://lochness.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Loch Ness Monster Exhibition</a> at Drumnadrochit (easy for you to say) addressing the ongoing dilemma about whether Nessie is real or not.</p>

<p><a href="https://eden-court.co.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Eden Court</a> is the premier arts centre for the Highlands and Islands, with a busy programme of film, theatre and dance in a variety of venues. The <a href="https://www.castlegallery.co.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Castle Gallery</a> has an outstanding collection of paintings, sculpture and textiles by British artists in an 18th-century building made with wattle and daub walls. Early Aug is a date for the diary for the <a href="https://tartanheartfestival.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Belladrum Tartan Heart Festival</a>, well loved for headline acts.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-best-kept-secret">BEST-KEPT SECRET</h2>



<p>Inverness is renowned for being the place where the best Queen’s (or should that be King’s) English is spoken. Johnson and Boswell remarked on it, as did Daniel Defoe and even Sir Alex Ferguson!</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-commute">COMMUTE</h2>



<p>Inverness Airport acts as the main hub for access to the Highlands and Islands as well as to London and even a few European holiday spots, with a bus connection to the city centre. There is also a train station, with the Caledonian Sleeper to London taking just over 11 hrs. The A9 is the main route south, the A96 leads to the north-east and the A82 runs up the side of the Great Glen. Expect around a 3hr drive to Edinburgh or Glasgow.</p>
