<p><a href="https://www.visitscotland.com/info/see-do/luskentyre-sands-p2569901">Luskentyre beach</a>, on the Isle of Harris, is regularly voted as one of the UK’s best and most beautiful beaches. And it is truly epic. The turquoise water and white sands could trick you into thinking you’re in the Caribbean&#8230; if it weren’t for the mountains of North Harris and of course, the weather, which is very much not tropical! This walk <strong>(2.75 miles)</strong> begins at Tràigh Rosamol, the northernmost part of the Luskentyre Sands. Simply follow the beach until you reach the cemetery and then loop back round to the village.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Trotternish Ridge is the trail everyone walks when they visit Skye. But head to the Duirnish peninsula and you’ll find walks just as rewarding, with dramatic landscapes, including thousand-foot-high cliffs and beautiful coral beaches that are much less busy. For a fairly strenuous hike <strong>(10.5 miles)</strong>, head to Idrigall Point. A well-marked path from Orbost will lead you to <a href="https://www.walkhighlands.co.uk/skye/macleodsmaidens.shtml">Macleod’s Maidens</a>, three towering sea stacks. For something gentler <strong>(1.75 miles)</strong>, <a href="https://www.isleofskye.com/skye-guide/top-ten-skye-walks/neist-point-lighthouse">Neist Point</a> is the most westerly headland on Skye. It offers stunning cliff scenery, a very photographable lighthouse and the chance to see minke whales in the summer.&nbsp;</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-one-for-coves-and-caves">The one for coves and caves</h2>

<p>The <a href="https://www.morayways.org.uk/routes/the-moray-coast-trail/">Moray Coastal Trail</a> stretches 50 miles from Findhorn in the west to Cullen in the east. The whole route is splendid, but Muddy’s favourite section is from Burghead to Lossiemouth <strong>(9 miles)</strong>. It’s a grand walk along clifftops with hidden coves and caves with ancient Pictish drawings. The walk sweeps to a finish along a glorious stretch of golden beach.&nbsp;</p>



<p><em>Muddy tip: There’s a Tee Shack (their pun, not ours!) on the golf course about halfway along if you need a pitstop for a hot drink and a café at Lossiemouth Harbour at the end.</em></p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-for-all-the-wildlife"> For all the wildlife</h2>

<p>The stretch of Aberdeenshire coast from <a href="https://www.rspb.org.uk/days-out/reserves/fowlsheugh">St Cyrus to Fowlsheugh</a> <strong>(15.7 miles)</strong> is a feast for the wildlife lover. Start in the National Nature Reserve at St Cyrus where wild flowers and an unbelievable variety of insects and birds make it one of the richest and most diverse nature reserves in Britain. From there follow along the clifftops to take in the spectacular views. You&#8217;ll also see an extraordinary quantity of kittiwakes, fulmars and oystercatchers nesting along the route. Finish at RSPB Fowlsheugh (the name literally means &#8216;bird cliffs&#8217;) home to puffins at certain times of the year. Or, if you’ve still got miles in your legs, go three miles further to end at Dunnottar Castle.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-for-ultimate-solitude">For ultimate solitude</h2>

<p>If there&#8217;s one section of coastline renowned for its beauty, it’s <a href="https://www.johnmuirtrust.org/about-us/where-we-work/sandwood">Sandwood</a> Bay. It&#8217;s also pretty inaccessible – you can only get to it on foot, making it one of Scotland’s more magnificent, if remote, coastal walks. The route <strong>(9 miles there and back)</strong> starts at Blairmore and follows a well-marked path past multiple lochs and over sand dunes before opening out into the bay. The reward is a huge beach of golden sands and a fantastic view north to Cape Wrath, the most northwesterly point of Scotland.&nbsp;</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-for-baby-seal-watching">For baby seal watching</h2>

<p>It can be a challenge to psych yourself up for a good blast on the coast in November. But the prospect of seeing pure white, baby seals on the beaches north of Eyemouth has got to be a strong incentive. The circular route from <a href="https://www.nts.org.uk/visit/places/st-abbs-head">St Abbs</a> to St Abb’s Head <strong>(4 miles)</strong> starts at the reserve car park, is well signposted and takes you past several coves which are known breeding grounds for grey seals which return there every year to pup. To protect them, the path is fenced off from the beach, but you’ll still be able to see them up close.&nbsp;</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-for-great-pubs">For great pubs</h2>

<p>The East Neuk of Fife is renowned for its picturesque fishing villages. The <a href="https://fifecoastandcountrysidetrust.co.uk/walks/fife-coastal-path/">Fife Coastal</a> path which links them all together is a great way to explore. What’s more, you can break up the route as you like, with a quick refresher in the village pub. Muddy’s preferred route is from Elie to Pittenweem <strong>(4.2 miles)</strong> with a pint in The Ship Inn.&nbsp;</p>



<p><em>Muddy tip: If it’s sunny bring your swimmers – the route is littered with tidal pools for swimming.</em></p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-for-the-most-southerly-one">For the most southerly one</h2>



<p>Scotland&#8217;s southernmost point, the <a href="https://mull-of-galloway.co.uk/">Mull of Galloway</a>, offers dramatic coastal views, the chance to visit a lighthouse and opportunities for wildlife spotting. It’s a trail <strong>(5.5 miles)</strong> that follows a figure of eight and is great for older children with lots of variety. Start in the car park at Gallie Craig and ramble over the clifftops where seabirds nest and there are ruins of the ancient St Medan’s Chapel.</p>



<p><em>Muddy tip: You can cut the walk short in the middle of the eight. There’s a cafe for cake in the car park at the end!</em></p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-for-island-views">For island views</h2>



<p>The Kintyre peninsula, stuck out like a finger into the wild Atlantic, is worth the drive. The <a href="https://www.thekintyreway.com/">Kintyre Way</a> zig zags 100 miles over the peninsula and Muddy’s favourite section is the third leg from Clachan to Tayinloan <strong>(9 miles)</strong>. Largely flat, the beauty of this walk is the view – the islands of Jura, Islay and Gigha hold your eye with the promise of what could be found beyond the horizon.</p>
