Relentless drizzle? Sideways rain? Wind that eats umbrellas? Welcome to Scotland. But fear not – because from inflatable parks and science labs to chocolate factories and illusion museums, there’s a whole world of indoor adventure waiting. Here’s where to head when the weather turns feral…

Shoot ’em up

Nothing beats a full-throttle blast of competitive energy when everyone’s climbing the walls. Indoor laser arenas like Laser Combat in Dundee, Clydebank and Cambuslang, Laser Station at Braehead and Edinburgh or Laser Go in Inverness let kids dodge, hide and fire harmless beams in neon-lit battle zones – no bruises, no mud, no tears. Most centres take kids from around 6+, and many offer party packages if you’re feeling generous.

If they fancy something more futuristic, some bowling and leisure complexes now offer VR gaming pods, where kids can escape into zombie worlds, racing simulators or space battles. Bigger kids (12+) can get involved at Glasgow’s VR Party Arena, Inverness Virtual Reality Experiences (13+), and AberdeenVR (8+), while kids as young as 6 can have a go at Showcase the Street in Dundee. If you’re less keen on the shooting, lots of these venues also have VR escape rooms. VR on Skye is great for its immersive group puzzles. Fun for all the family if you want to join in.

A retro gaming café in Glasgow it has some VR experiences for when the kids start eyerolling at your passion for Pacman. Add bowling, arcades and milkshakes into the mix and you’ve basically bought yourself three rain-free hours. Winner.

Bounce, Slide, Repeat

When small people have big energy and nowhere to put it, you need height, bounce and chaos – safely contained. Enter Scotland’s army of trampoline parks and inflatable arenas.

Flip Out (Glasgow and Dundee), AirHop (Aberdeen and Edinburgh) and Inflata Nation (Glasgow) are huge hits with older kids, offering wall runs, foam pits and dodgeball courts. Think parkour-lite, but indoors.

For the littlies, you’re really spoiled for choice when it comes to soft play centres. WeePlay (Glasgow), Wonder World (Glasgow, East Kilbride, Falkirk, Kirkcaldy, Edinburgh and Perth), FunParx (Dundee and Edinburgh) and City Kids Adventure Play (Glasgow) provide slides, tunnels and climbing frames – plus coffee for parents clinging to sanity.

Top tip: book ahead in school holidays. When it rains, everyone has the same idea.

Mad scientists and curious minds

Got a child who asks “why?” every six seconds? These places are your rainy-day salvation. Glasgow Science Centre, Dundee Science Centre, Aberdeen Science Centre and Dynamic Earth in Edinburgh all specialise in hands-on learning – earthquake simulators, body exhibits, space zones, live experiments and planetariums.

Up north, Inverness Museum & Art Gallery offers interactive Highland history and archaeology, while Ayrshire’s Dick Institute in Kilmarnock time travel and storytelling beautifully with family-friendly trails. It’s learning, yes – but cleverly disguised as button-pressing, wheel-spinning, light-flashing fun.

Bonus: most centres are brilliant for mixed ages, so toddlers and tweens can coexist peacefully for once.

Trains, planes and automobiles

If your child loves anything with wheels, wings or engines, head straight for one of Scotland’s brilliant transport museums.

Riverside Museum in Glasgow is the gold standard – packed with trams, buses, trains and fire engines you can climb into – no “don’t touch” signs in sight. Dundee Museum of Transport and Scottish Maritime Museum in Irvine and Dumbarton are equally strong contenders, especially for boat-obsessed kids. Add in Discovery Point in Dundee, where they can explore Captain Scott’s Antarctic ship, or Aberdeen Maritime Museum, packed with paraphernalia from boats and oil rigs, and you’ve got immersive history that actually holds attention.

Or take to the skies! Head to the National Museum of Flight in East Fortune where children can explore real aircraft. Dry, warm and fascinating.

Stormy seas and island stories

Scotland’s coast and islands shine even in bad weather – especially indoors. From Oban War and Peace Museum to Campbeltown Heritage Centre, via Arran Discovery Centre (AKA the Octopus Centre!) and all things Pictish Groam House Museum on the Black Isle, these smaller museums pack huge personality into compact spaces. They’re ideal ferry-day backups and often come with friendly volunteers and unexpected hands-on exhibits.

Optical illusions and mind tricks

For something a bit different, head for the wonderfully weird. Camera Obscura and World of Illusions in Edinburgh is a standout – six floors of vortex tunnels, mirror mazes and visual trickery that delights everyone from age 6 to adult. It’s part science, part magic, part “how is that even possible?”

Dumfries Camera Obscura might be smaller, but it still packs a punch – it has the oldest working camera obscura in Scotland. When it comes to quirky fun and hands-on experiences both offer the “wow” factor without full-scale soft-play mayhem.

Makers and mess lovers

When you want calm rather than carnage, creative studios are your friend. Across Scotland, places like The Craft Pottery in Glasgow, The Wee Pottery in Kirkcudbright and paint-your-own cafés like Doodles in Edinburgh offer relaxed sessions where kids can decorate mugs, plates and figurines – which you’ll later treasure (or quietly hide in a cupboard).

Local arts centres are great for hands-on workshops too. Gracefield in Dumfries and Hawick’s Borders Textile Towerhouse regularly host family craft days – ideal for when everyone’s bored by 10am and arguing by 10:15.

Sweet treats and magical mixes

Sometimes the answer is sugar. In Edinburgh, The Chocolatarium lets kids five and over make and taste their own chocolate creations, learning where cocoa comes from along the way. It’s part factory tour, part tasting session, part Willy Wonka-lite experience.

Nearby, The Potions Cauldron offers short, theatrical “potion brewing” sessions that are wildly popular with Harry Potter fans and fantasy lovers. Think dry ice, colourful liquids and lots of dramatic stirring. A short and sweet solution to dreich days.

Culture (but make it fun)

Scotland’s major museums are secret rainy-day heroes. The National Museum of Scotland in Edinburgh, Kelvingrove Art Gallery in Glasgow and V&A Dundee all offer family trails, interactive zones and activity packs that turn wandering into a game.

Further north, Shetland Museum in Lerwick, Orkney Museum in Kirkwall and Ullapool Museum deliver similarly engaging experiences on a smaller scale.

From dinosaur skeletons and space tech to fashion galleries and armour displays, these places work brilliantly for mixed ages and they’re mostly free – always a mood-lifter.
