Inspired by the Oscars to see more at the cinema this year? Do it in style. Scotland is full of gorgeous boutique and independent cinemas where you can see films old and new. Think grand Art Deco theatres, lovingly restored heritage picture houses and tiny community-run screens with bags of charm – some are even roaming! Plus at lots of these, you can grab coffee or cocktails or make it night with dinner. Proof, if ever it were needed, that going to the cinema can still feel like a proper night out. 



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-city-arthouse-heavyweights">The city arthouse heavyweights</h2>



If you love a fabulous cinema building almost as much as the films themselves, Scotland’s cities do not disappoint.

In Glasgow, the much loved <a href="http://glasgowfilm.org" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Glasgow Film Theatre</a> is the gold standard for arthouse programming. A non-profit venue in the heart of the city, it champions world cinema, retrospectives and director seasons alongside new releases and a cultural hub vital to the city&#8217;s film festival. Muddy tip: Even if you don&#8217;t consider yourself a full-blown cinephile, it&#8217;s a nice spot for a night out. Grab a drink in the wee bar downstairs and treat yourself to some big screen energy.

Over in Edinburgh, two independent cinemas anchor the capital’s film scene. The newly refurbished <a href="https://www.edfilmfest.org/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Filmhouse</a> made a triumphant return after being rescued from permanent closure, reopening in June 2025. It quickly returned to its place as one of Scotland’s leading arthouse cinemas. Expect international releases, thoughtful retrospectives and a strong connection with the <a href="https://www.edfilmfest.org/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Edinburgh International Film Festival</a>. Muddy tip: What&#8217;s nice about the Filmhouse is that you can see an early showing and grab coffee from their 100-seater cafe/bar just as easily as you could enjoy a glass of fizz at an evening viewing.



For something a little more glamorous, the family run <a href="http://dominioncinema.co.uk" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Dominion Cinema</a> delivers serious old-school glamour. Housed in a beautiful Art Deco building, it mixes mainstream films with curated screenings, all delivered with a premium lounge feel and famously comfortable seating. Muddy Tip: Go VIP and book a Platinum Suite for access to the Champagne Bar on entry, double and single seats with reclining footrests, backrests and headrests, plus hot food, cocktails and to seat service. 



While it’s not strictly an indie, <a href="https://www.picturehouses.com/cinema/the-cameo" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">The Cameo</a> (part of Picturehouse group) absolutely earns a place on this list. Boutique, iconic and more than a century old, it pairs blockbuster crowd-pleasers with arthouse favourites in one of Edinburgh’s most atmospheric cinema spaces. Muddy tip: Cameo is another cinema with a great cafe/bar. Yamato next door does cracking Japanese food to make a full night of it.



For private members&#8217; club meets cinema vibes, you can&#8217;t got far wrong with <a href="https://www.scotsmanpicturehouse.co.uk/home" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">The Scotsman Picturehouse</a>. Sofa seating and small-screen luxury, it&#8217;s tucked inside the Scotsman Hotel. Muddy Tip: It&#8217;s connection to the Grand Cafe means you can indulge in Fizz and a Flick brunch for daytime delights, or take advantage of their regular dinner and a film deals.

Further north in Perth, the characterful <a href="http://theperthplayhouse.co.uk" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Perth Playhouse</a> continues the tradition of historic picture houses. Originally built in the 1930s, its Art Deco charm and loyal audience give it a distinctly local personality.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-beyond-the-big-cities">Beyond the big cities</h2>



One of the best things about Scotland’s cinema scene? So many brilliant independent screens exist well beyond the central belt.



<a href="https://highlandcinema.co.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">The Highland Cinema</a> in Lochaber is not your classic boutique cinema but it is pretty brilliant. A red corrugated roofed building, it houses two state-of-the-art cinema theatres, with the latest in laser digital projection and sound systems, and boasts that it shows new releases the same day they&#8217;re shown in Leicester Square. Muddy tip: The restaurant and bar has a wood burning stove, cosy seating and a covered terrace overlooking the town square. Dogs are welcome in the restaurant and on the terrace (as long as they&#8217;re dry) and there are often dinner and film deals to be had.

In Moray, the <a href="https://caledoniancinemas.co.uk/MorayPlayhouse.dll/Home" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Moray Playhouse</a> shows everything from new releases to smaller titles, while on the west coast the beautifully restored <a href="https://www.campbeltownpicturehouse.co.uk/whats-on" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Campbeltown Picture House</a> is widely considered one of the country’s finest heritage cinemas.



The <a href="https://annancinema.co.uk/LonsdaleAnnan.dll/Home" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Lonsdale Cinema</a> in Annan keeps the indie spirit alive down in the south west of the country and you’ll also find passionate local audiences and excellent programming at <a href="https://birkscinema.co.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">The Birks Cinema</a> in Aberfeldy, <a href="https://www.studiocinema.co.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Studio Cinema</a> in Dunoon and <a href="https://www.chalmersfilmhouse.co.uk/now-playing" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Arbroath Cinema</a>. Muddy tip: The Birks Cinema has a cafe open all day with a strong lunch menu and daily specials.

Fife also has its own mini indie cinema scene thanks to <a href="https://thekinocinemas.co.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">The Kino</a> in Glenrothes. And in St Andrews the historic New Picture House has been given a new lease of life as <a href="https://cinema.tsquaredsocial.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">T-Squared Social</a>, complete with a fresh new energy and a full roster of cinematic programming. Muddy tip: This is a great spot to come with your teenagers – they show live sports on the massive screens and host state-of-the-art sports simulators. Keep them occupied while you sip a craft cocktail from the bar.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-arts-centres-with-excellent-film-programmes">Arts centres with excellent film programmes</h2>



Some of Scotland’s best film programming is tucked inside arts venues. Combining cinema with theatre, music and visual art, they&#8217;re ideal if you like your culture with a side of variety.



<a href="https://www.dca.org.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Dundee Contemporary Arts</a>, for example, offers a consistently brilliant film programme that ranges from international arthouse releases to documentaries and festival selections. <a href="https://www.macrobertartscentre.org/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">The Macrobert Arts Centre</a> at the University of Stirling runs an equally thoughtful cinema schedule, while the Highlands’ cultural hub <a href="https://eden-court.co.uk/explore-cinema" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Eden Court Theatre</a> in Inverness regularly screens new and independent releases.

Head further north and you will find film programmes at <a href="https://www.shetlandarts.org/venues/mareel" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Mareel</a> in Lerwick, the UK’s most northerly cinema and arts venue.

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-heritage-and-community-cinemas">Heritage and community cinemas</h2>



Some venues are special not just for the films they show but for their place in Scottish cultural history.

The extraordinary Bo’ness <a href="https://www.hippodromecinema.co.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Hippodrome</a> is Scotland’s oldest purpose built cinema, dating back to 1912. Lovingly restored, it now hosts the internationally renowned Hippodrome Silent Film Festival. In Dumfries, the <a href="https://rbcfilmtheatre.co.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Robert Burns Centre Film Theatre</a> combines arthouse cinema with a strong local arts programme.



Community initiatives also keep the big screen alive in smaller towns, such as the volunteer-run <a href="https://cromartycinema.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Cromarty Community Cinema</a> and <a href="https://nscinema.co.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Newton Stewart Cinema</a>.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-cinema-that-comes-to-you">The cinema that comes to you</h2>



Finally, there is one of the most unique film experiences in the country. <a href="https://www.screenmachine.co.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">The Screen Machine</a> is a 78-seat travelling cinema that has been bringing first run films to remote Highland and island communities since 1998. Touring year-round, it ensures that even the most far-flung corners of Scotland can still enjoy the magic of the big screen. Honestly? Iconic.
