WHAT? WHERE?

Cargilfield sits in the leafy suburb of Cramond, on the north-west edge of Edinburgh, close to the coast and within easy reach of the city. Founded in 1873, it’s Scotland’s oldest prep school and occupies a 13-acre campus that blends Victorian buildings with modern specialist facilities – large enough to feel spacious, but never sprawling or intimidating.

Most pupils are day children, with 43% boarding for one to four nights a week. There’s no full or weekend boarding here: this is very much a flexi model designed around busy family life.

Reputation-wise, Cargilfield is known as a sporty, high-achieving but grounded prep – ambitious without being flashy and firmly focused on producing confident all-rounders rather than narrow specialists.

FACILITIES

SPORT

Sport is central to life at Cargilfield – children play it daily – and the culture is competitive but not win-at-all-costs.

Facilities are excellent: multiple grass pitches, a full-size 4G astro and two others, tennis courts, a large sports hall, indoor and outdoor cricket nets, plus a newly added (and very popular) indoor rowing studio. But the real USP comes early: in P3, all pupils ski weekly at Hillend dry slope – a rare offering at prep level. The only thing that’s missing is an on-site pool.

Rugby, hockey, netball and cricket dominate – and standards are high.

Hockey is the standout: The school regularly reaches national finals in hockey, pupils are selected for regional and national squads, and teams compete across the UK.

Cricket comes a close second. Played year-round by boys and girls, it benefits from specialist indoor coaching and a partnership with Edinburgh Cricket Academy. Scotland international George Munsey coaches regularly and Cargilfield was the only Scottish school recognised in The Cricketer Magazine’s 2023 Top 50 Prep Schools Guide. Several former pupils are currently in Scotland U15 and U19 squads.

Importantly, sport here remains inclusive: children compete at their own level, whether recreational or elite. What’s more, if they’re really not into competitive sports, they can get their physical fix by taking part in Outdoor Pursuits. That balance – lots of sport, but no single-track obsession – defines the school.

CREATIVE ARTS

Creative provision is strong, busy and well-used rather than glossy.

Art facilities include a large, light-filled studio, pottery wheels and kiln, plus dedicated textiles and printmaking. These sit alongside a thriving DT lab with 3D printers and laser cutters – spaces that are frequently open during breaks, with pupils choosing to work independently.

Music is arguably Cargilfield’s strongest creative area. Around 75% of pupils learn at least one instrument, every child sings and many take music theory exams. There’s a long-established pipe band that plays at key school events, including Founders Day and Remembrance.

The music department has dedicated practice rooms and a large classroom. While the building is relatively modern, further soundproofing improvements are planned – a practical acknowledgement of the realities of pipes and percussion rather than a lack of ambition.

Drama is part of the core curriculum for all pupils, with additional opportunities at break times. The school chapel doubles as a performance space, and this year’s whole-school production of The Lion King will involve singing, instrumental music and African rhythms across year groups.

SCHOOL

Beyond the specialist spaces, what stands out most is the atmosphere. The wood-panelled chapel and library both have real fires, and there are sofas everywhere – in form rooms, common areas and boarding spaces. It’s subtle, but it matters: the school feels settled, calm and lived-in, even on busy days.

Science labs and a dedicated coding room are well equipped, but Cargilfield’s real strength lies in how comfortably children inhabit the place.

LITTLIES

Early Years pupils have their own dedicated indoor space and a generous outdoor area, while still accessing wider school facilities. The balance between structured learning, free play and outdoor adventure is well judged.

Every Friday, children choose between a beach trip or woodland exploration, they go outdoors to their purpose-built garden daily whatever the weather and use the more extensive school grounds two half-days a week. French and music are introduced early, helping ensure a smooth, well-supported transition into P1 and the Prep School proper.

ACADEMICS

Cargilfield is non-selective, but it does expect children to be able to cope with a busy, structured and broad curriculum. Prospective pupils sit standardised English and Maths assessments to ensure the school is the right fit.

Academically, this is a solid, stretching prep rather than a hothouse. Teaching is thorough and expectations are clear, but pressure is evenly distributed – children are encouraged to aim high across the board, not pushed hard in one area at the expense of others. The school performs strongly in Common Entrance and, so far, all pupils have moved on to their chosen senior schools. Scholarships are common, spanning academics, sport, music, art and drama – a good indicator of breadth rather than exam cramming.

There’s plenty of time for children to explore their own pursuits in the school day – during an extended morning break children can choose where they want to be and what activity they want to try, giving the school its reputation for offering one of Scotland’s most rounded prep experiences.

PASTORAL CARE

“Everything is pastoral” is the head’s mantra – and it shows.

Support comes from form teachers, boarding staff and the school nurse, with strong informal contact between adults and pupils throughout the day. There’s currently no on-site counsellor, but staff training and visibility are high, and children are closely known.

Peer support is particularly strong. All Form 8 pupils undertake anti-bullying training and act as Anti-Bullying Ambassadors, often sitting with younger children to help resolve worries or conflicts. It’s a quietly effective system.

BOARDING

Boarding at Cargilfield is flexi first, not traditional full boarding.

Children can board from age 8, and around 43% stay at least one night a week. Boarding runs Monday to Thursday, booked by the term. The school day finishes at 5.30pm, followed by optional supper and a wide range of evening clubs until 7.30pm.

There are occasional themed boarding weekends, but the expectation is always that children go home regularly.

SEND AND LEARNING SUPPORT

The school refers to SEND as ASN (Additional Support Needs), in line with Scottish terminology. ASN provision is a notable strength and is fully integrated into everyday teaching. The school has a specialist team able to assess needs such as dyslexia, and staff training is strong. With small class sizes (around 15), teachers tend to spot difficulties early, and the emphasis is on in-class support, not pulling children out unnecessarily.

This works particularly well for children with mild to moderate learning needs who benefit from structure, familiarity and confidence-building. It’s not a specialist SEND school, but for the right child, support here is proactive, calm and effective.

THE HEAD

Colin MacIntosh joined Cargilfield this academic year from Ashfold School in Buckinghamshire. He’s inherited a confident, high-performing school and appears focused on deepening rather than reinventing.

Early priorities include strengthening the reading culture and further developing the already much-loved library. His leadership style is energetic and visible, and he seems aligned with the school’s existing ethos: ambition without undue pressure and achievement grounded in community.

QUIRKS

Not every school can boast that their pupils get to go skiing every week. There are also timetabled chess classes (developing the deep learning the head is so committed to) and every Wednesday there’s a whole school debate after matches.

Children wear their own kilts for smart outings and away matches and, as you’d expect of any self-respecting Scottish school, they also learn how to reel.

WRAP-AROUND CARE

There’s an Early Birds club and an after-school club for children aged 3 to 8, and older pupils can stay on for supper and evening clubs until 7.30pm. Flexibility is a genuine strength here.

EDUCATION SCOTLAND REPORT

The school had its last inspection in 2023 – very good or better across the board. Inspectors particularly highlighted the school’s excellent standards of academic attainment, the warm and friendly family atmosphere and the articulate, kind and responsible children the school was helping to shape.

MOBILE PHONE POLICY

Cargilfield promotes a low-screen, high-focus culture. Mobile phones are not permitted at school. Full stop.

WORD ON THE GROUND

Don’t just take our word for it when it comes to consistency and breadth: Cargilfield was named Tatler Prep School of the Year 2026, and The Best of The Best for Extra-Curricular award from The Week.

The pace is busy and the sporting commitment is significant – but for families who want their kids to try lots of things without burnout, that’s the appeal.

TRANSPORT

If you live nearby, there’s a comfy seat on a Cargilfield bus with your child’s name on it. A minibus service runs Monday to Friday for local routes and further afield to Fife, Perth and Midlothian at £4.50 per journey.

Bus routes serve Edinburgh and the wider Lothians. The nearest train station is Edinburgh Gateway (with easy access to mainline stations at Haymarket and Waverley).

Edinburgh Airport is very close – only 15 minutes away.

Weekly boarding supplements range from £690 (1 night) to £1,980 (4 nights) per term.

THE MUDDY VERDICT

GOOD FOR: This is a school for energetic, curious children who enjoy being busy and trying everything. Cargilfield delivers impressive results – on the sports field, in music rooms and academically – without ever feeling pressured or intense. The atmosphere is calm, confident and quietly ambitious, helped along by fires, sofas and a culture of trust.

NOT FOR: It’s not the right fit for single-minded specialists or those who truly dislike sport and the outdoors. But for families seeking breadth, flexibility and strong outcomes without flashiness, it’s a compelling option.

But feel free to disagree! The next open morning is 15 May.
