<p>If you picture nursery school as a gentle prelude to &#8216;real school&#8217; – a place of paint pots, story time and low-stakes play – you’re only seeing the surface. Beneath it lies one of the most critical phases of human development, when the foundations for learning, behaviour and emotional wellbeing are laid down at remarkable speed. Between three and five, children are not just preparing for school; they are, quite literally, building the architecture of how they will think, relate and learn for the rest of their lives.</p>

<p>At Cargilfield, that understanding shapes everything. Their approach to nursery education is not about accelerating children prematurely or ticking off early academic milestones. Instead, it’s about recognising that emotional security, social confidence and academic readiness are deeply intertwined – and that getting those foundations right early on changes everything. As Headteacher Colin MacIntosh explains, nursery is where a child’s entire relationship with education begins: “That emotional reaction that they have towards a school is so vital. It’s important to get that whole attitude to an educational institution right early on because it sets children up for what’s ahead.” Central to that is something deceptively simple but profoundly important: “a sense of feeling safe, feeling supported and of belonging.”</p>



<p>These aren’t fluffy add-ons – they’re the starting point from which all learning flows.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-emotional-foundation-feeling-safe-comes-first">The emotional foundation: Feeling safe comes first</h2>



<p>Before a child can learn to read, write or count, they need to feel secure. It’s a point Cargilfield’s Head of Nursery Tiffany Murdoch returns to again and again: emotional wellbeing is not separate from learning – it underpins it.</p>

<p>Colin is unequivocal: “Don’t underestimate happiness. It really matters – particularly academically.” A child who feels safe and valued is far more likely to engage, take risks and embrace new challenges. Without that, even the best teaching struggles to land.</p>



<p>Tiffany sees this play out daily in the nursery environment, where success is measured holistically rather than narrowly. “It’s looking at the child as a whole,” she explains. “&#8221;If they have a secure relationship with adults, and feel safe, valued and understood, they&#8217;re able to explore, they&#8217;re able to be curious and they&#8217;re motivated. That makes confident learners.&#8221; That means paying as much attention to confidence, emotional regulation and relationships as to any academic marker.</p>

<p>These early years are also when children are forming the habits that will shape their lifelong attitude to learning. Things like perseverance, motivation and resilience, “those are learned habits,” Tiffany says. But they don’t appear overnight. They’re built through repeated positive experiences: encouragement, success, relationships and the freedom to make mistakes. “If a child is feeling, and experiencing on a daily basis, success, encouragement, perseverance and positive relationships that attitude to learning will be created in them.”</p>



<p>Crucially, those emotional patterns can cut both ways. Positive early experiences foster curiosity and confidence; negative ones can lead to anxiety and withdrawal. Which is why, as Colin points out, those first encounters with school matter so much: they can shape a child’s attitude to education “permanently”.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-social-foundation-learning-how-to-be-with-others">The social foundation: Learning how to be with others</h2>



<p>Alongside emotional security sits another essential pillar: social development. Nursery is often a child’s first sustained experience of being part of a group and the skills learned here ripple out far beyond the classroom.</p>



<p>At its simplest, this is about learning to share, take turns and play cooperatively. Watching young children begin to collaborate, negotiate and create together is not just charming – it is foundational.</p>

<p>These skills, Tiffany explains, are built through experience rather than instruction. Repeated opportunities to interact, resolve conflicts and navigate friendships gradually form the social habits that make later learning possible. “If you&#8217;ve learned how to share, take turns, cooperate, resolve conflicts, – important social skills – then, when you&#8217;re learning in a group later on, it means that you&#8217;re going to be confident and excited about those experiences.” she explains. Without them, the classroom can become an overwhelming place. “If you don&#8217;t have those social skills, those class time experiences are going to be full of anxiety. You&#8217;re going to feel withdrawn, overwhelmed and a bit defensive.&#8221; </p>



<p>The nursery environment is carefully structured to support this. Children move between small group times – offering a sense of security and tailored support – and larger periods of free play, where they mix across ages. That mix is powerful: younger children learn by observing older peers, while older children develop empathy and leadership. “When you’ve got older ones supporting the younger ones it allows for an acceleration of the development of social and emotional skills,” Tiffany says.</p>



<p>Even everyday routines, like sitting down together for lunch, play their part in building social confidence and a sense of community. It’s all part of creating that feeling that children belong, not just to a classroom, but to something bigger.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-academic-foundation-learning-through-play-and-loving-it">The academic foundation: learning through play (and loving it)</h2>



<p>If emotional and social development form the bedrock, academic learning is built on top – but not in the way many might expect. At this age, learning is not about formal lessons or worksheets. It’s embedded in play, exploration and experience.</p>

<p>To the untrained eye, a nursery classroom might look like organised chaos. But a child building a tower is not just stacking blocks; they’re solving problems, testing hypotheses, learning persistence and developing spatial awareness. Tiffany highlights how rich this process is: “They’re risk taking, having to work with friends and, if it doesn’t go right, they’re developing resilience to try again.”</p>



<p>This is why the environment matters so much. Resources in the nursery are deliberately open-ended, encouraging imagination and critical thinking rather than prescribing outcomes. “If you have toys that are very structured, it’s not going to allow as much creativity,” she explains. Instead, children are given materials they can use in multiple ways, prompting them to think, adapt and create.</p>



<p>There’s also a careful balance between child-led play and adult guidance. Short, targeted group sessions introduce key skills – from early phonics to numeracy – which children then apply in their play. “We’re trying to allow the children to have the tools they need so that when they’re playing, they feel successful,” says Tiffany.</p>



<p>Language development sits at the heart of this academic foundation. “Language is the key to unlocking understanding and all other subjects,” she says. Through constant conversation, storytelling and exposure to new vocabulary, children build the communication skills that underpin all their future learning. Crucially, this is done in a way that is responsive and child-led, allowing confidence to grow alongside competence.</p>



<p>Even early reading and writing are introduced gently and at the right moment. Rather than forcing readiness, the approach is to spark enthusiasm. The result? Children who are eager rather than reluctant. “They’re so excited about reading and writing because they’re ready and they want to do it.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-environment-why-outdoors-matters-as-much-as-indoors">The environment: why outdoors matters as much as indoors</h2>



<p>Another key ingredient in this foundation-building is the environment itself – particularly the outdoors. Far from being a break from learning, outdoor time is an extension of it.</p>



<p>For Tiffany, the benefits are wide-ranging. “You get much richer sensory input when you’re in an outdoor environment,” she explains. From balancing on uneven ground to building dens and even learning to make fires, children are developing physical strength, coordination and risk awareness alongside confidence and independence.</p>

<p>Outdoor play also supports emotional regulation. Time in nature can reduce stress and help children reset, making them more receptive to learning when they return indoors. “It allows children to be more open to learning once they’ve had that break, that brain break,” she says.</p>



<p>Just as importantly, it introduces real-world experiences and problems to solve – whether that’s figuring out how to construct a shelter or navigate a tricky terrain. These are the kinds of challenges that build resilience and adaptability, key traits for both school and life.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-bigger-picture-foundations-that-last">The bigger picture: foundations that last</h2>



<p>What emerges from all of this is a picture of nursery as far more than preparation for the next stage. It is, in many ways, the stage that determines how successfully a child will navigate everything that follows.</p>



<p>The emotional foundation – feeling safe, supported and valued – creates confident learners. The social foundation – understanding how to interact, cooperate and empathise – enables children to thrive in group settings. And the academic foundation – built through play, language and exploration – equips them with the tools to engage with formal learning when the time comes.</p>



<p>These strands are inseparable. As Colin simply puts it, “You can’t separate them – happiness and learning go hand in hand.”</p>

<p>By the time children leave nursery, the transformation is striking. Where once there may have been hesitation and dependency, there’s now independence, curiosity and confidence. As Tiffany describes it, children go from clinging close to adults to “happy, confident and constantly asking, what challenge have we got now?”</p>



<p>And that, perhaps, is the clearest measure of success. Not just children who are ready for school, but children who are ready – and excited – to learn.</p>
